Here is the part almost nobody tells you: low porosity hair is not damaged hair. In most cases it is the opposite. Healthy hair with an intact cuticle naturally repels water. That is what it is supposed to do. Hair only starts drinking water quickly once bleach, heat or friction have chipped that outer layer away. So if your conditioner sits on top and your hair takes three hours to dry, your hair is not broken. It is sealed. You do not need to fix it. You need lighter products, a bit of warmth, and a fortnightly reset. This guide shows you exactly how, including the hard water problem most articles skip.

What low porosity actually is

Your hair has an outer layer called the cuticle. Picture roof tiles overlapping down the shaft.

  • Low porosity: tiles lie flat and tight. Water and product struggle to get in.
  • High porosity: tiles are lifted or chipped. Water rushes in and escapes just as fast.

On top of those tiles sits a thin lipid layer called 18-MEA. It is the reason healthy hair beads water rather than soaking it up. Bleach, heat and harsh shampoo strip that layer away, and that is what turns hair porous.

Read that again, because it changes everything. High porosity is usually earned through damage. Low porosity is usually just intact hair. Your challenge is a logistics problem, not a health problem.

Why the float test does not work

Nearly every article tells you to drop a hair into a glass of water. Float means low porosity. Sink means high.

That test has never been validated in cosmetic chemistry or trichology literature. It also is not taught in professional cosmetology training. Here is why it fails:

  • Surface tension dominates. A single hair weighs roughly 60 to 100 micrograms. That is nowhere near enough to break the surface film of water. Almost all hair floats, whatever its porosity.
  • Sebum and product residue repel water. Any leftover oil or conditioner makes hair float regardless.
  • One strand is not your whole head. Porosity varies from root to tip, and the tip is always the oldest and most weathered part.
  • It is not repeatable. The same strand can give different results on different days.

It is a fun kitchen experiment. It is not a diagnosis.

Use this instead: the 3 signal check

Behaviour beats gimmicks. Run all three on freshly clarified, product-free hair.

  1. The dry clock. Wash, squeeze with a towel, then time full air drying. Under 1 hour suggests high porosity. Over 2 hours suggests low porosity. This is the single most reliable home signal.
  2. The timed spray test. Mist a small section of dry hair with water. Watch the droplets. Sitting as visible beads after 20 to 30 seconds points to low porosity. Vanishing almost instantly points to high.
  3. The build-up check. Two days after washing, run a finger down a strand. A coated or waxy feel, or dullness you did nothing to cause, is classic low porosity behaviour.

Two out of three agreeing is your answer. Also check your roots and ends separately, especially if you colour your hair. Most people who bleach are low porosity at the root and high porosity at the ends, and that is why one routine never works on all of it.

Signs you have low porosity hair

  • Hair takes 2 to 3 hours or more to air dry.
  • Water beads on the surface when you first get in the shower.
  • Products leave a white film or a waxy feel.

  • Conditioner seems to do nothing unless you leave it on for ages.
  • Hair feels stiff after a heavy protein mask.

Three or more? You are almost certainly low porosity.

The coconut oil myth, corrected

You will read everywhere that coconut oil is bad for low porosity hair because it causes "protein overload". That is not what the research says, and it is worth correcting.

In the most cited study on the subject, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2003, researchers tested coconut, sunflower and mineral oil on human hair. Coconut oil was the only one of the three that meaningfully reduced protein loss, in both damaged and undamaged hair. The reason is chemical. Coconut oil is a triglyceride of lauric acid, which has a small, straight, linear structure and a genuine affinity for hair protein, so it can move into the shaft. Mineral oil is a hydrocarbon with no protein affinity. Sunflower oil is too bulky to get in.

So coconut oil does not add protein. It stops your existing protein washing away.

Then why do so many low porosity people say it makes their hair stiff? Two practical reasons, not a protein reason:

  • It goes solid at normal room temperature. Coconut oil sets below roughly 24C, or about 75F. In most homes for most of the year, that means you are applying a semi-solid to hair that already struggles with surface build-up.
  • People use far too much, and leave it in. The evidence is strongest for pre-wash use, where it limits water swelling during the wash. As a leave-in on tight cuticles, it just coats.

Why jojoba is still the everyday winner

Jojoba is not technically an oil. Around 97% of it is wax esters rather than the triglycerides found in most plant oils. Human sebum is roughly 25% wax esters, which is why jojoba behaves so much like your own scalp oil.

What that means in practice:

  • It spreads extremely thin, so 2 or 3 drops covers a lot of hair.
  • It suits an oily scalp because you are not adding an unfamiliar heavy layer.
  • It resists going rancid, so it keeps well.
  • It works as a carrier for actives like rosemary.

Be clear on what it does not do. Jojoba does not grow hair. In head to head testing it has been outperformed on growth by both minoxidil and peppermint oil. It conditions the shaft and supports the scalp. That is its job, and it does it better than almost anything for this hair type.

The hard water problem

This is the section missing from almost every low porosity article, and it matters more than which oil you pick.

Water hardness comes down to local geology, not which country you live in. Water that filters through chalk and limestone picks up dissolved calcium and magnesium, and that is hard water. Water running over granite or volcanic rock stays soft. Hardness can swing dramatically between two towns an hour apart, so a national average tells you nothing useful.

How to tell what you have

  • Hard water signs: white crust inside the kettle, chalky marks on taps and shower screens, shampoo that will not lather, skin that feels tight after a shower.
  • Soft water signs: lather comes easily and fast, skin feels slightly slippery when you rinse, no scale build-up anywhere.

If you moved house and your hair suddenly "changed" for no obvious reason, you did not imagine it. Your water did. Your water supplier will publish a hardness figure for your area if you want the exact number.

What the evidence actually says

Here is the honest position, because the internet overstates this badly.

  • Mineral deposition is real and measured. Electron microscopy studies confirm hair washed in hard water carries more calcium and magnesium on the surface. More calcium is taken up than magnesium, and damaged hair absorbs more than virgin hair.
  • Strength effects are disputed. One trichology study found no significant difference in tensile strength or elasticity between hard and distilled water at around 212 ppm over 30 days. Other work has found reduced breaking force. The results conflict, and duration plus concentration probably explain the gap.
  • Hair loss claims are not supported. There is no robust clinical evidence that hard water causes alopecia. If you are shedding heavily, see a doctor. Iron deficiency and thyroid problems are far more likely and both are treatable.

So: hard water is a build-up and feel problem, not a proven damage problem. For low porosity hair, which already struggles with surface residue, that build-up problem is genuinely the thing standing between you and products that work.

What to do about it

  • Use a chelating or clarifying wash every 2 weeks. This is different from normal shampoo. It lifts mineral deposits, not just oil.
  • Fit a shower filter. Inexpensive, and it helps more than you would expect.
  • Rinse for longer than feels necessary. Most people stop far too early.
  • Finish with a cool rinse to flatten the cuticle.

Oily scalp, dry ends: solved

This combination confuses people constantly, and it is the signature low porosity complaint.

The cause is simple. Your scalp makes sebum as normal. But sebum travels down the hair shaft by physical contact, and a tight, smooth cuticle plus a lack of natural anchoring means it pools at the root instead of spreading. Your ends get nothing.

The fix:

  • Wash the scalp. Condition the ends. Treat them as two different jobs.
  • Brush root to tip with a boar bristle or soft brush to physically move sebum down.
  • Never put heavy oil at the root. Jojoba only, if anything.

  1. Warm water first. Start your wash warm. Finish cool to seal.
  2. Cap and towel. Apply conditioner or mask, add a shower cap, wrap a warm damp towel over it, wait 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Steam. Sit in a steamy bathroom with your mask on. Free and effective.

People constantly discover that the conditioner they called useless works perfectly once warmth is added. The product was never the problem. The door was shut.

Your low porosity routine

Wash day

  1. Optional pre-wash oil. Melted coconut or jojoba on mid-lengths and ends. 30 minutes.
  2. Wet properly. Warm water through the hair for a full 30 to 60 seconds before shampoo. Low porosity hair needs longer to get genuinely wet.

Mistakes that keep low porosity hair dry

  • Using more product when it is not working. More of something that cannot get in just makes a thicker layer. Use less, add warmth.
  • Skipping the fortnightly clarify. This traps you in a cycle where nothing works.
  • Oiling soaking wet hair. Damp, not dripping, is the sweet spot.
  • Treating roots and ends the same. Especially if you colour.
  • Judging a product after one use. Give any new routine 3 or 4 wash cycles.

What about protein?

"Protein overload" gets thrown around a lot online. Be a little sceptical. It is a community concept rather than a well-defined clinical one.

What is true: heavy hydrolysed protein treatments can leave hair feeling stiff, and low porosity hair struggles to take them in evenly, so residue sits on the surface. Undamaged hair also has less to repair in the first place.
